Immigration and History Repeats Itself…

A few main topics in the media today is that there are children being ripped away from their families and being put into cages, like an animal. Is this all Trumps doing or is this history repeating itself?

Let’s start with Trump wanting to build a wall. Trump started his race for presidency talking about how he wanted to build a wall and keep the illegal immigrants out. Is this the first time the United States wanted to put up a wall at the southern border? No, it’s not the first time, or the first president to do so.

In 2006 an executive order was passed calling for a fence to be put on the southern border. The fence would be hundreds of miles long, and double-layered. Later, in 2011 the Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano canceled the fence being put up. The reasons she gave for cancelling the fence was there were technical problems, the cost was overrun, and there were delays in the schedule.

Let’s move on to the deporting of illegal immigrants and the denial of immigrants who want to become a citizen in the United States. In the American history Asian and Chinese origins were deported or denied access to this country. Women who were citizens, who married an immigrant lost their citizenship. In 1922 Japanese immigrants were ineligible for citizenship. In 1923 the US Supreme court disqualified Asian Indians because they were not white. Mexican immigrants were forced to leave the country between 1929 and 1936. Those are just examples of the American history that has occurred. President Trump isn’t the only one doing this type of thing to immigrants.

This brings the topic of a famous President Franklin D. Roosevelt and what he did towards immigrants. In 1942 President Roosevelt signed an executive order that sent tens of thousands of Japanese Americans to internment camps. What is an internment camp? It’s a prison camp. Later, President Roosevelt sent Native Alaskans to the internment camps as well. Why wasn’t this a big deal?

Later, in 1976 President Ford repealed the executive order that President Roosevelt signed and proclaimed it as a “National Mistake”. If one president can do something like that and a later president fixed it, do we really know that Trump is the one to blame for these kids getting ripped from their parents? What if President Trump is trying to fix the issue and didn’t think up the issue?

Let’s look at President George W. Bush’s presidency. During his presidency there was the terrorist attacks in 2001. Once that happened a couple months later the US Department of Defense tightened and expanded the military support along the borders. This showing that through out the history of the United States illegal immigrants have been a problem.

In 2005 President Bush secures the border. This included the following things to be done: more agents to patrol, secure, and enforce the immigration laws, eliminate the ‘catch and release’ problems, and expand the technology on the borders.

Now we know that the borders are trying to be locked down. That is until the Obama presidency. President Obama signed a document that allowed some undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as a child to stay. Yet it was put on hold in 2016. In 2014 President Obama signed an executive action that prevented deportation of millions of immigrants to the United States illegally.

Obama wanted to let the illegal immigrants in and yet every other president wanted more security and less illegals in the States.

President Trump has signed an executive order that has increased the border patrol and is planning to build a wall. Just like a fence was going to be built years ago. He signed two orders suspending entry of people from several Muslim countries and all refugees. History point, when the United States banned Chinese, Japanese, and Mexicans they all were deported and banned. The United States is now having problems with Muslim countries. In 1940’s it was issues with the Japanese.

In 2018 President Trump signed an executive order that stated that no immigrant families would be separated at the border. It’s a start. The Trump administration just needs to realize that to gain control of the illegal situation, there needs to be structure, and consistency. If there is no structure or consistency, then there is no control.

Ask yourself this, who makes the laws? The President of the United States must get the approval of the Supreme Court, to have anything set in stone. Racism and deporting of illegal immigrants is on going in the history of the United States. The immigrants who so called get “picked on” has a pattern of who the United States is having trouble with at the time.

As the people of the United States we need to remember our history and notice the pattern. The pattern of issues we tend to have. The President is just one piece to the puzzle. The other pieces still must be put in to help make the difference.

The Lady in Red Lipstick

She wore a jean jacket and jeans. On her left wrist she wore a black Mickey Mouse watch. She has her hair nicely put together, and the grey color shimmered in the sun. On her ears was gold hoop earnings. She didn’t wear much make-up but she had blush and red lipstick on. When she walked in the room, she brought such a wonderful feeling with her.

Grandma was a kind and generous lady. On summer days my sister and I would get to be at grandmas, and help sell chickens out of the back of the red van. The chickens would covered with layers and layers of blankets and rugs. Grandma would take out her jewel calculator and add up the totals of what everyone owed. Grandpa would come in with his overalls and say “Oh say, … is here”. My sister and I would go out and grandma so kindly would tell us to grab four whole chickens, and three half chickens. She would wear her smile and chat for a few minutes and then we would go back in to sit around the kitchen table.

Grandma would sit on the side that faced the door. This way she had a better view of the door, and who was coming in and out. My uncle would come in stand in the door and talk about the cows, or the weather, or who was planting down the road. He would tease me and my sister a little and be on his way. As soon as he left we would ask grandma if we could dig through uncle garbage for “important papers” and play office in her big bay window in the living room. She never denied us.

Grandma liked her hallmark movies, and movies like them. My sister and I would always choose a movie to watch with her. She especially liked the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. As we would sit and watch the movies she would softly scratch our backs.

One of the best things about my grandma is I got to share a birthday party with her. No one else shared the month of August with us, and that was something special. One year she gifted me a pair of bright yellow overalls. Just because grandma gave them to me they were special. She was always so thoughtful of the gifts. The best gift I ever received was from my grandma and Aunt. They gave me a pink puppy for my 2nd birthday. My puppy since the moment I opened the gift has gone everywhere with me.

Grandma had beautiful flower gardens and a beautiful big garden. Getting to pick strawberries and other veggies with her was always a treat. She always knew how to cook her produce better than anyone else I know. Her cooking skills were one of a kind.

There were always great memories to hold on to about my grandma. Her kind heart, her soft touch, her smile. The best part is I got to call her Grandma.
