The Lady in Red Lipstick

She wore a jean jacket and jeans. On her left wrist she wore a black Mickey Mouse watch. She has her hair nicely put together, and the grey color shimmered in the sun. On her ears was gold hoop earnings. She didn’t wear much make-up but she had blush and red lipstick on. When she walked in the room, she brought such a wonderful feeling with her.

Grandma was a kind and generous lady. On summer days my sister and I would get to be at grandmas, and help sell chickens out of the back of the red van. The chickens would covered with layers and layers of blankets and rugs. Grandma would take out her jewel calculator and add up the totals of what everyone owed. Grandpa would come in with his overalls and say “Oh say, … is here”. My sister and I would go out and grandma so kindly would tell us to grab four whole chickens, and three half chickens. She would wear her smile and chat for a few minutes and then we would go back in to sit around the kitchen table.

Grandma would sit on the side that faced the door. This way she had a better view of the door, and who was coming in and out. My uncle would come in stand in the door and talk about the cows, or the weather, or who was planting down the road. He would tease me and my sister a little and be on his way. As soon as he left we would ask grandma if we could dig through uncle garbage for “important papers” and play office in her big bay window in the living room. She never denied us.

Grandma liked her hallmark movies, and movies like them. My sister and I would always choose a movie to watch with her. She especially liked the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. As we would sit and watch the movies she would softly scratch our backs.

One of the best things about my grandma is I got to share a birthday party with her. No one else shared the month of August with us, and that was something special. One year she gifted me a pair of bright yellow overalls. Just because grandma gave them to me they were special. She was always so thoughtful of the gifts. The best gift I ever received was from my grandma and Aunt. They gave me a pink puppy for my 2nd birthday. My puppy since the moment I opened the gift has gone everywhere with me.

Grandma had beautiful flower gardens and a beautiful big garden. Getting to pick strawberries and other veggies with her was always a treat. She always knew how to cook her produce better than anyone else I know. Her cooking skills were one of a kind.

There were always great memories to hold on to about my grandma. Her kind heart, her soft touch, her smile. The best part is I got to call her Grandma.
